Why Everyone Is Curious About Remain

M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film Remain is already attracting attention, and the reason is simple: it brings together two names audiences would not normally expect to see on the same project — Shyamalan and bestselling romance writer Nicholas Sparks.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, Remain is a supernatural romantic thriller set around Cape Cod. Gyllenhaal plays Tate Gordon, an architect dealing with grief who arrives in the coastal town to work on a summer home.

His life changes after he meets Wren, a mysterious woman who draws him into a relationship that soon becomes connected to a much darker mystery. The movie is scheduled to reach U.S. theaters on February 5, 2027.

Interestingly, the film was originally planned for October 2026 before Warner Bros. moved it to its new February release date. The novel on which the movie is based, written by Sparks and Shyamalan, was released in 2025 and became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.

There is no box-office number for Remain yet, but Shyamalan’s previous film Trap gives some context. Made with a reported $30 million budget, Trap earned about $83.7 million worldwide, including $42.8 million domestically.

Its opening weekend brought in roughly $15.5 million in North America. What makes Remain particularly interesting is the genre combination. It is not being positioned as a straightforward horror movie or a conventional love story.

Instead, audiences can expect romance, mystery and supernatural elements to gradually come together. With Gyllenhaal leading the cast and Shyamalan behind the camera, Remain could become one of the more unusual theatrical releases of early 2027.

The big question now is whether this unexpected combination of romance and supernatural suspense can translate into a box office success.
