SIFPA Condemns Unilateral 8-Week OTT Window

Bengaluru/Chennai, 19 April 2026 – The South Indian Film Promoters Association (SIFPA) has issued a strong statement criticising the unilateral imposition of an eight-week theatrical exclusivity window by exhibitor associations in the southern film industry.

SIFPA has denounced the decision, which was advanced by theatre owners’ associations without sufficient consultation with producers, distributors, and other stakeholders. The association stressed that such independent measures disregard the collaborative framework necessary for the industry’s long-term sustainability.

The policy stems from a March 2026 summit held by exhibitors from the five southern states in Bengaluru. It mandates that all new films observe a minimum eight-week (approximately 56-day) exclusive theatrical run before any release on over-the-top streaming platforms, satellite television, or other non-theatrical channels. The initiative also proposes shifting from fixed rental models to revenue-sharing agreements between producers and exhibitors.

Producers have expressed concern that the extended window will diminish the value of OTT acquisition deals, particularly for mid- and small-budget films that depend on timely digital revenues. SIFPA has called for a balanced, consensus-based approach to safeguard the interests of all parties in the film value chain.

This development highlights ongoing tensions in the South Indian cinema sector, spanning Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and related industries. While exhibitors seek to protect theatrical attendance amid rising streaming consumption, producers emphasise the need for flexible terms that support creative investment and financial viability.

SIFPA has urged all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to reach mutually acceptable theatrical terms. Negotiations among producers’ councils, exhibitor bodies, and OTT platforms are expected to continue, with potential implications for future release strategies across the regional film landscape.
